• Larner Vineyard, Ballard Canyon Larner Vineyard, Ballard Canyon The Larners 134-acre ranch is located near the southern end of Ballard Canyon AVA. The 34-acre vineyard contains 23 acres of Syrah, six acres of Grenache, with smaller amounts of Viognier, Mourvèdre and Malvasia Blanca. Ballard Canyon is the newest of the AVA’s in Santa Barbara County, established in October of 2013. This relatively small AVA encompassing only 7,800 acres sits at the center of the Santa Ynez Valley with Los Olivos to the North East and Solvang to the South. It produces Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Roussanne, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Viognier. Syrah accounts for almost half of the planting.
  • Los Olivos General Store Los Olivos General Store Sitting on the corner of Grand and Alamo Pintado is the historic Los Olivos General Store. This site was one of the oldest gas stations in California established in 1901. The Larners respect and commemorate that history with the vintage gas pump installed out front. After trying to open a tasting room on their vineyard property and hitting a wall with the process, the Larners had wine to sell and no place to sell it! Christina talked Michael into looking at Los Olivos. The owner of the Los Olivos General Store was looking to move to Napa and put in a good word with the landlord. Unfortunately the landlord did not want a tasting room on the property. So the Larner’s opened the space as a retail space focusing on artisan products and turned a section of the space into a gallery for Christina’s art. Christina paints with red wine on paper. Recently they were able to open their tasting room in the gallery space, so you can taste through all the current Larner releases. • Wine Philosophy Wine Philosophy Geology, Origin, Territory On all the Larner labels you will see the words Geology, Origin & Territory. Geology: Michael’s background is in geotechnical engineering. His background in rocks and soils ties in beautifully with growing wine grapes, and the basics for the job, wanting to spend more time outside then in an office make this a good fit for him. Origin: When you talk about “soil” you are talking about the decomposition and erosion of something else. The geology is the “origin” of the soil. Origin is also important as the vineyard and winery continue to evolve and grow. Michael’s parents were the “Origin” for the vineyard idea and this has now been handed down to Michael and his sister and hopefully some day to his children. Remembering the “Origin” and maintaining a link to that beginning is important to hand down. Territory: The French speak of Terroir, the expression of the climate and soil in the grapes. Here in American that translates to “territory”. The “Territory” for these wines is Ballard Canyon and specifically the Larner Vineyard. The idea is to allow the wines to express the place. So there you have it: Geology, Origin, Territory. Three words that sum up the philosophy of Larner Vineyards and Winery.
