New Zealand National Rosé Day
New Zealand National Rosé Day is February 5th! While February finds many in the Northern Hemisphere bundled up with mittens, in the Southern Hemisphere, they are enjoying the summer!
2024 is the 9th celebration of New Zealand Rosé Day, established by Sip NZ!
In 2021, my friend Casey of Travelling Corkscrew and Fraser Wine decided that Australia should get in on the National Rosé thing, too!
Rosé is more than a color!
Remember, Rosé is more than a color. Each grape brings its flavors, aromas, and personality to the wine. The location and weather affect the grape, as do the winemaking techniques!
I encourage you to try a variety of rosés from New Zealand and Australia and notice the differences!

New Zealand Rosé
In New Zealand, you will find Rosé made from Bordeaux and Rhone varieties on the North Island and Pinot Noir on the South. But if you want some bubbles, look for Sparkling Rosé from Marlborough or Central Otago!
High-quality Rosé of Pinot Noir comes from Central Otago, where Pinot Noir makes these wines bright with berries and crisp on your palate.
In Gisborne, the hot summers give fruit-driven roses of Merlot and Syrah. The same varieties lend themselves to the rosés of Waiheke Island, but these rosés have a different depth and intensity!

Australian Rosé
In Australia, rosé wine can be made from a WIDE variety of grapes and blends. This is, after all, a large country!
You might find Sangiovese Rosé from Gundgai in the southern part of New South Wales or a Barbera Rosé from McLaren Vale! A Nebbiolo Rosé from the Yarra Valley or Tasnamian Rosé of Pinot Noir! This is a big country with so many varieties grown in such different areas, and winemakers using multiple techniques to make various styles!

I’ll give a shout-out to Swift, the sparkling brand under Printhie Wine in Orange, Australia. Their NV Rosé is charming! Or Krinklewoods Francesca Rosé made of Merlot & Mourvedre. They are a biodynamic vineyard in Broke Fordwich, in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.
Do more than “Drink Pink”
The idea here is not just to “Drink Pink” but to look into the nuances and differences in wines of this shade!
So, whether you are in the Southern Hemisphere or not, I encourage you to find a rosé from these regions and bring a bit of brightness to your February!

Check out our book series, “Tempting Spoonfuls” available through Amazon!
Inspired by the flavors and aromas in wines, these books create “tempting spoonfuls” of flavors to pair with wines.
“Tempting Spoonfuls – Pairing single bites with glorious wines” – Our first book paired wines from boutique wineries on the west coast, in California, Oregon, and Washington, with delicious spoonfuls.
This book is 60 pages, 18 recipes, lots of beautiful photos, and insights into some fantastic small wineries!
“Tempting Spoonfuls – small bites paired with wines from around the Globe” – This book takes us around the globe to explore 12 wine regions, a wine from the region, and then gives you a recipe for a pairing!
A slightly larger book at 104 pages, this time you learn about pairing with a type of wine from a region. Rather than a specific bottle, you can look for a style of wine from a region and feel confident that it will go well with the recipe pairing we provide. We give you 12 recipes, each to pair with a wine.
The goal is to make your mouth water and encourage you to create your own “Tempting Spoonfuls.”
