Wine with the Tour de France
Today, we travel out of the Côte d’Or into the southern part of the Champagne region. This is a bit outside the normal boundaries, so I wasn’t able to locate specific regions. Quite honestly, there are few places in France where vineyards are not found.
We are skirting around the Chablis region, which is west of today’s route. That is the Burgundian Region devoted to Chardonnay. If you want to taste a pure expression of Chardonnay, I believe this is where you look. So, today, let’s look to the West and sip in some Chablis.
The region is 80 miles Northwest of the Côte d’Or. On the map, it is actually closer to Champagne than to the rest of Burgundy. The soil here, Kimmeridgian Marl (the same as the white cliffs of Dover), creates exceptional Chardonnays.
